His emergence into the limelight in 2010 after he performed at Mgqumeni’s posthumous in 2010 iSecret.
Khuzani was born in Nkandla, specifically in the Emandaba village, to his father Muziwephala Mpungose and his mother, Mrs. Sizakele Mpungose, fondly called MaNgema. He is the second child in a family of five and three children.
His educational journey began in 1995 at Mvaziya Primary School, located in Emandaba, where he studied until 1998, laying a foundational understanding in his early years. In 1999, he transitioned to Sibhakabhaka Primary and High School, also situated in Nkandla, where he continued his studies until 2002.
In 2003, seeking new opportunities, Khuzani moved briefly to KwaZulu-Natal and then furthered his education in Pretoria at Makgatho Primary School. After a short time there, he returned to KwaZulu-Natal and completed his grade 12 in 2009 at Sibhakabhaka Primary and High School, marking a significant milestone in his academic career.
During his younger days, Khuzani found great inspiration in the music of Mgqumeni, known for his hit “Ibhova likadikadika,” as well as Mtshengiseni Ngcwensa, famous for “Indidane.” This influence propelled Khuzani towards a career in maskandi music, a genre he felt passionate about. Tragically, on February 19, 2009, Khuzani’s greatest influence, Mgqumeni, passed away while he was in the process of recording an album titled “I-Secret.”
At the time of his death, Mgqumeni was under the management of a music production company called Izingane Zoma Music Promotions, which was founded and directed by Shobeni Khuzwayo. Following Mgqumeni’s untimely passing during the album’s recording, Khuzwayo appointed 20-year-old Khuzani to take over and complete “I-Secret,” citing Khuzani’s voice as being remarkably similar to that of the late artist.
However, there are claims that this narrative is misleading. DSD, a member of Mgqumeni’s band, reportedly inquired about when Khuzani would finish the album, to which Khuzani could not provide a clear answer.
This situation suggests that the aim was to promote the Mgqumeni name posthumously to gain traction in the music industry. Despite the controversies surrounding its production, the album “I-Secret” ultimately received recognition, winning an award at the South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA).
In 2011, Khuzani entered the music industry with his inaugural album, *Bahluleke Bonke*. This marked the beginning of his career as a musician. The following year, in 2012, he released his second album, *Amapungunge*. This album was instrumental in boosting his popularity, leading to significant attention.
Notably, during a live broadcast on Okhozini FM, the prominent figure Mtshengiseni Gcwensa expressed confidence in Khuzani’s potential, predicting that he would attain great success as a maskandi singer and win numerous awards, similar to those earned by Ndidane. This recognition has resulted in Khuzani being affectionately dubbed the “King of Maskandi” by his fans, who additionally refer to him as “King Khuba.”
It is important to note, however, that supporters of his main rival, Mthandeni Manqele, dispute this title. Throughout his career, Khuzani has worked alongside numerous esteemed artists, which has contributed greatly to his musical evolution.
Some of these collaborations include work with Ndidane (Mtshengiseni Gcwensa), Izingane Zoma, Shobeni Khuzwayo, Shwi Nomtekhala, Osaziwo, Babes Wodumo, Imfezemnyama, Amagez’Amahle, Andile kaMajola, Lebo M, Big Nuz, and Afro Soul, among others. In 2017, Khuzani released the album *Isixaxa Samaxoki*, which quickly gained acclaim, achieving gold status within just two months of its release.
This particular album included collaborations with a variety of artists, such as Skhindi Zondi, Phathaphatha, Maqhude, Senzo Kanyile, and Thibela Mpungose, highlighting his versatility and further enhancing his impact within the maskandi genre.
